Created in 1962 by current owner Josef, the Anco remains Amsterdam's longest operating men-only gay hotel. The house dates from 1640, while the interior is Dutch modern designer-functional, with a certain nice gay feel, marked by splashes of white and red. Located literally within crawling distance of the Warmoesstraat and the Zeedijk. A gay Amsterdam instititution.

Ugh
Big Mistake. Gruff reception on arrival. Bad omen. Room was so small and narrow and dark, completely ruined my trip (I prepaid for 6 nts) and left the hotel after just two nts. Getting to the room is depressing - up a narrow spiral of stairs reminiscent of being on a boat (so narrow I could hardly bring my suitcase up - no kidding). Leaving hotel, back down stairs. Ooops, forgot umbrella, climb back up the narrow stairs up two flights. Can't stress enough how depressing my room was. Asked for a fridge - no expectation, just asking if it was available - and got a small plug-in box big enough for a single soda can (yes, that's right, - I'm not exaggerating- about 8" tall - you still think I'm exaggerating right?). Bottom line, thought I'd go for some friendly gay atmosphere over another hotel site - but lobby was always deserted. Thought I'd shave some $$ with this choice as well (shared bathroom) but that was a BAD decision (I'm glad I brought sandals). I really don't understand the rave reviews here . . .Just my two cents.
close to everything
Rooms are basic but clean, share bathroom for most rooms. Close to everything and good value
Great location, nice staff
Room kind of small, but very clean and adequate; Nice breakfast area to met other guests. Fun to sit on the front steps at night with a beer and take in the lively street scene. We will return again!
Nice & Helpful Staff
Had the pleasure of staying twice during my recent holiday to Amsterdam & Belgium. Within a few hours of arriving I was on a private canal tour with a great bunch of guests & Dave is a wonderful guide. The morning breakfasts are a great start to the day & a nice way to meet others. Location is central for venturing out & easy to find your way around from. Great people, place & price. Happy to recommend & return again soon!
Greatest place to stay
The guys that work here are wonderful, friendly, and accomodating. The breakfast has greatly improved over the years. The inner rooms look into a courtyard, and if other guys have their drapes open, you can see into their rooms. This can be hot if you are into it. The prices are some of the best in town for a gay hotel, and the location is fantastic.
