Pathé Tuschinski
A jewel of a movie theatre
Otherworldly cinema opened in 1921, when movie houses were built as palaces. The mishmash of decorative styles — Amsterdam School, jugendstil, art nouveau and art deco — works a glorious treat, with interiors by Pieter den Besten and Jaap Gidding. The building itself was designed by Hijman Louis de Jong, who died in Auschwitz in 1944, aged 62. And the cinema takes the name of the inspired entrepreneur originally behind it, Polish émigré Abraham Icek Tuschinski (1898-1942), who also did not survive the Holocaust. This is everyone's favourite cinema in Amsterdam, and among the world's most treasured. It was renovated at the turn of the century, with a three-screen annex added, and is now operated by Pathé.
